At ‘Wash California’ located on Foothill & 26th you are guaranteed to see the hustling in and out of laundry baskets. But if you’re lucky, on the right day, you might find the spectacle of John Goodwin, a local circus performer, tossing his ‘devil sticks’ in the parking lot. He lives across the way from the Laundry Mat and while he waits for his laundry, he entertains whoever is around with what looks like fancy baton twirling dubbed with music. John has lived in East Oakland for many years and performs with other circus entertainers in Oakland and San Francisco. He say his inspiration to take up devil sticks came from a song called, ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’.
Maddie was given a free introductory lesson in devil sticks…
